Investigating

Once a report is made, CPS and law enforcement will work together while making individual investigations. In Santa Clara County, a Family Interview facility enables several agencies to perform one interview with professionals trained in interviewing children.

CPS (Child Protection Services)

  • conducts a family assessment
  • develops a case plan based on family strengths, needs, contributing factors, and safety risks
  • provides direct services
  • coordinates other services
  • maintains case records
  • evaluates progress
  • produces court reports

CPS only removes a child from the home if their safety is in danger. The family may be referred for counseling or other community resources.

The investigating agency must inform the mandated reporter of the results of the investigation and any action that is being taken.
